Case Study: Home Modifications After a Major Fall
Learn about a real case scenario where we facilitated bathroom modifications

After experiencing a major fall, an 80-year-old aged care client saw a noticeable decline in both mobility and confidence. Everyday tasks that were once manageable became increasingly challenging, with personal care being the most difficult. The bathroom, in particular, posed significant safety risks due to limited space, reduced balance, and difficulty moving safely within the environment.
The primary goal of Occupational Therapy intervention was to support the client to remain living safely at home while preserving dignity and independence. Achieving this required more than a standard solution. Careful consideration was given to the client’s physical abilities, the tight layout of the existing bathroom, and the needs and preferences of both the client and his family.
A collaborative approach was key. We worked closely with the client and his family to gain a clear understanding of daily routines, current challenges, and long-term goals. Together, we explored a range of design options that balanced safety, accessibility, and practical use of the limited space, ensuring the final plan felt both functional and respectful of the client’s wishes.
To bring the plan to life, we liaised directly with builders, translating clinical recommendations into clear, practical design specifications. This included reviewing measurements, advising on grab rail placement, safe transfer zones, and overall layout to support ease of movement and long-term usability. Adjustments were made throughout the process to ensure the final design remained achievable within the constraints of the home, while still meeting the client’s functional needs.
The completed bathroom modification significantly improved safety and accessibility, reduced the risk of further falls, and helped restore the client’s confidence in managing personal care tasks. Most importantly, it allowed the client to continue living at home with greater independence and provided reassurance to his family that the environment now supported his safety and wellbeing.
